Mari Ishiwata, founder of the Ishiwata Biennale, has asked the artists to create works based on the communications that they’ve had with her. She has also asked them to face to who they are ( how they live their daily life, what is the background of their life history etc… ) , as same as what she does in her own creation.

The Ishiwata Biennale 2009 consists of two parts: exhibition and performance shared by nineteen individual or collective artists.
